~My Ultimate Goal as a Teacher~
Every student is a gift. With that in mind, my ultimate purpose as a teacher is guiding each of my students to discover their gifts and use them to improve their lives and the world. For me, teaching is the opportunity to support and inspire my students in creative and differentiated ways, helping them achieve not only the core curriculum expectations, but also to fulfill their own personal learning goals. My role is to come alongside and encourage them as they realize their full potential from their unique set of talents.
I recognize that students come from diverse backgrounds with many different experiences and expectations. My goal is for each student to recognize their unique perspective and challenge themselves to grow by reflecting on their own experiences. Respect and compassion is key to creating a secure learning community where students can focus on the curriculum and their own personal growth. I challenge my students to not only meet my these expectations, but to surpass them.
~As a Science and Math Teacher~
In the fast-paced world we live in, teachers have to compete with video games, television and social media to reach their students. One of the best ways students can be reached is through hands-on education. With science, I believe all lessons can be hands-on. Whether it is skateboarding to demonstrate inertia or riding the merry-go-round to learn centripetal force, all lessons can be taught in a manner that applies to life.
Science and math should be taught through inquiry. Students should be given the opportunity to ask questions and test their theories to discover the truths in math and science. Through insightful problems, lab experiences, and projects, I am able to motivate my students to be autonomous as they take control of their learning. In my classroom, you will often find students leading discussions or sharing with others what they have learned.

| Students leading a class discussion |
Every school year, I discuss the right to an education with my students. Through this discussion, my students realize that even though education is a right in our country, only they can choose to take advantage of it. I share with them my personal history, letting them know that I am the first college graduate in my family. By staying focused on my goal of escaping poverty, I was able to accomplish more than I ever dreamed I could.
I had many odds going against me and lost friends (who were disrespectful towards my focus on education) as I pursued my goal, but I do not regret my choice for a moment. Together, my students and I discuss obstacles they will need to overcome on their journey to success. I allot time for my students to reflect on their own lives and determine what barriers stand in their way of going to college and becoming successful in life. I am always open with students regarding my own situation and am available to discuss their personal situation if they choose to do so. I hope my story inspires students to set their goals high and reach them.
